Practice Statement

We care deeply about the way in which we draw and convey design ideas, with modelmaking central to this process at Allies and Morrison. Our studio modelshop is a hive of activity and experimentation. It is often where design concepts are first given physical form, helping to guide the evolution of projects from early concept through to developed proposals. Models allow the team to understand buildings as three-dimensional compositions, helping shape how they engage the street, skyline, and wider city. The unique quality of physical models helps support and spark conversations with clients, collaborators, and the public.

Sister C1 - Facade Study Model / 1:20 / Facade Model Representing a typical corner condition of Sister C1, the model explores the contrasting conditions of the south and west facades and the transition between the two. The larger scale provides the opportunity to study the finer detailing of the precast facade panels alongside the relationship to the tone and articulation of the glazing system. As a physical object, the model was instrumental in supporting collaborative conversations across the project team. Sister C2 - Corner Bay Study Model / 1:75 / Facade Model Certain building corners are framed and expressed throughout Sister Plot C. These moments are emphasised by the offset plan diagram of the two buildings and their relationship to the surrounding context. The model focuses on the north-eastern corner of Sister C2, demonstrating how several defining characteristics of the scheme are present in a single vertical composition. It presents how the building engages with the public realm at ground level and contributes to wider city views at roof level. The model represents the visual connections between the community space of the Manchester Room and the public realm, framed by robust precast piers whose tone and texture are informed by the board-marked Hollaway Wall. Articulated external amenity spaces provide breakout areas to each office floor, introducing shadow and depth to the elevation. This vertical composition culminates in a distinctive single bay at roof level, forming part of the building’s sawtooth silhouette and marking its presence on the skyline.
