At EPR Architects, making matters because physical models are an integral part of our design process. While we embrace and pursue design in virtual, 3D environments, models allow us to explore ideas, test options and develop our thinking in a tangible way.
Our London studio houses an extensive model-making facility, which is a key resource in both design development and communication. The workshop enables a wide range of models, from quick massing studies at the start of a project to detailed presentation models of finalised designs. Some include moveable elements, fostering creative dialogue within the design team and with clients, while others are made from actual building materials to test how designs perform in different conditions - inside or out, light or dark, wet or dry.
Model-making supports our work on multiple levels. It allows us to iterate on ideas, explore alternatives and refine design decisions. Equally, it is a powerful communication tool - clients, consultants and colleagues can experience designs at a human scale and understand complex concepts more clearly. This combination of exploration and communication makes model-making an essential part of our approach, reflecting EPR’s commitment to design excellence and collaborative design.
By integrating physical making into a practice that also embraces virtual tools, we create a workflow that is both rigorous and responsive. Models enrich our design thinking, inform our decisions and help convey our architectural vision with clarity and impact. For us, making is not just a method - it is a central part of how we develop and share architecture.
