Practice Statement

We have always been passionate about making models, sometimes even at a large scale, and see them as essential design tools.

Models allow us to explore carving, assembling, forming and folding. Working with cardboard, chunks of stone, wood, steel and glass; checking, measuring, explaining working clients and engineers.

Three-dimensional way of working is, for us, the best way to develop and understand subtle and complex spaces and forms, whilst helping both clients and potential funding partners, to fully visualise the finished space. 

It is a way of being there and feeling what it's like, just another tool to help us get to the essence of the thing.

Rhodes House, University of Oxford, 1:10, Garden Pavilion In the West Garden, a new 50-seat glazed Pavilion provides a calm setting for Scholars to meet and exchange ideas. Conceived as a ‘room in the garden’, it contrasts with the introverted character of the existing Rhodes House by opening fully to its surroundings. The transparent envelope creates a strong connection with the landscape, allowing uninterrupted views of both the garden and the adjacent listed building. Developed with Webb Yates Engineers, the timber structure minimises loads on the glass. Its curved form distributes loads efficiently while forming an expressive canopy for gatherings. The Pavilion also addresses the challenges of a highly glazed building: its facades passively capture solar heat, while fan coil units extract excess heat for reuse within the main building. This presentation model was made to explore the timber structure and how it feels enveloping the space. The curved timber sections of the model were formed by laminating timber veneers over a former, allowing the us to test the geometry and spatial experience. Rhodes House, University of Oxford, 1:75, Sectional Competition Model This model was developed for a design competition proposal for Rhodes House and was produced through a collaborative process involving modelmakers and architectural staff working in parallel. A range of techniques were used, including laser cutting, workshop machining, spray finishing, and the modelling and 3D printing of the proposed new spiral stair. Careful coordination was required to represent the complex geometry and multiple levels of this historic building. The model was used to explain the key interventions and the principal route through the reconfigured building. Stanton Williams won the competition and developed the scheme in close collaboration with the Rhodes Trust and the wider design and construction team. The project transforms Rhodes House and its gardens through significant yet respectful interventions that complement Herbert Baker’s original architecture. The scheme doubles the building’s usable space and substantially improves environmental performance, while carefully restoring the 1920s building and historic gardens. The site has been reorganised to establish clear circulation routes, with new conference facilities at its heart. At the centre of the Rotunda, a new sculptural staircase leads to transformed lower floors, including a 300-seat Conference Hall and Foyer created within former archive spaces. Glazed lightwells bring daylight, fresh air and views of the gardens into these new interior spaces. While the Rotunda is an important memorial space, the intervention provides a subtle yet contemporary response to the existing stonework. Made by a member of the design team, the model was used primarily to test stair details and construction strategies, exploring proportions, structure, and how the new stone stair could be realised within the existing fabric. Its form responds to Herbert Baker’s architecture, balancing solidity and openness while maintaining light, views, and the Rotunda’s integrity. This is a typical sketch model that we might make, constructed quickly from polystyrene, card, and foamboard. It allowed the team to experiment with multiple options. The iteration shown here captures the final design of this significant intervention.
