Practice Statement

Modelmaking is central to our design process at Make, and reflects our wider spirit of curiosity and collaboration. Models give visual and physical shape to complex principles, allowing us to explore our designs through multiple physical iterations – a hands-on process that leads to new design possibilities and solutions. Their tangibility also enables us to illustrate our designs for key stakeholders, from the clients who commission our projects to the users themselves. As a studio that champions inclusivity, we value this clear communication of ideas, particularly when it comes to projects involving public consultation.

We have a dedicated in-house modelshop with three professional modelmakers trained in a range of materials and processes. Equipped with digital tools – including 15 3D printers and a CNC router  – as well as a traditional workshop, the space supports collaborative modelmaking with our architects. 

The modelshop crafts everything from quick foam sketches and full-scale mock-ups to detailed design development models, final presentation pieces, gifts and marketing  models. While our modelmakers handle most construction, all Makers receive training on basic tools (eg, hand tools and foam cutters) for independent sketch modelling, in step with our 'learning through making' philosophy.

Eden, Three New Bailey, Four New Bailey - 1:50 facade models This set of models shows the different facade types of three Make schemes across New Bailey, a vibrant mixed-use masterplan in Salford, Greater Manchester. Eden – This model shows the living facade at Eden, which is the biggest green wall in Europe, measuring 43,000ft2 and featuring 32 species of evergreen and perennial plants that drastically improve biodiversity across New Bailey. As the plants bloom and change with the seasons, so does the appearance of this office building, creating a dynamic and vibrant facade that’s always evolving. Three New Bailey – Our red brick weave facade design for this office building references Greater Manchester’s 19th-century warehouse architecture and bold engineered aesthetics. The model demonstrates the different brick bonds across the elevations, which include a smooth stretcher bond for the vertical and stack bond for the horizontal. Four New Bailey – The black metal diagrid structure of our architecture for this office building, a gateway to the masterplan, echoes the industrial Victorian heritage of the 1870s Irwell Street Bridge. This model shows the bold diagrid form and ceramic spandrels, which reference local ceramic-making traditions. 1:20 University library competition model This model was created as part of Make’s competition entry for a new university library building. The model was made using some of the same materials and process as those proposed for the actual building, including copper and stone. The roof was made by hand forming a copper sheet over a 3D-printed mould, while the tree column was 3D printed and moulded in silicone, then cast using a Jesmonite and stone mix. The furniture was hand-made from solid blocks of cherry timber.
